Here is a short article about herbalism careers: http://www.naturalhealers.com/alternative-medicine/herbal-medicine/

Here is my question of the day: What basic knowledge do I need to get started as a beginning herbalist?  What can beginners expect to learn from an introductory class offered by an established herbal medicine school?  Where do they start?

Below I have copied information about “Herbal Medicine 101” courses offered at five different schools.

1. San Francisco Bay Area — Ohlone Center – www.ohlonecenter.com

2. New Jersey – David Winston – http://www.herbalstudies.net/

3. Pennsylvania — Farm at Coventry – http://www.farmatcoventry.com/

ohlone herbal center 2

Ohlone Center of Herbal Studies is an earth-centered, community-based, herbal medicine school. Our mission is to keep Western herbal knowledge alive by bringing the knowledge of plant healing to the people, empowering the ability of everyone in the community to heal one another through the use of herbs. Classes are small, interactive, experiential, and tailored to our students’ needs – from medicine making, to clinical practice, to herbal explorations in nature. We offer a variety of classes, from one-day workshops to our formal Clinical Herbalist training program. This certificate program consists of 2-3 years of dedicated study, and culminates in the clinical internship, where students work directly with clients while being overseen by master herbalist Pam Fischer and other senior faculty. As a 501c3 non-profit, we maintain a strong focus on service. The community clinic is one of the most unique things about Ohlone, providing students the opportunity to begin building their practice while still in school.

Herbal Foundations Class – Berkeley

Gain an in-depth understanding of the complex functions and healing nature of more than 150 local plants through theoretical learning, herb gathering and sampling, and medicine making in this 300-hour program. Half of class time is spent hands on, in nature, with extended trips to local environments such as the Sierras and the Pacific Ocean. This is what distinguishes American herbalism—you learn about the plants in your own body, mind and spirit. You will create your own medicines during every class meeting, learning how to make extracts from multiple solutions, as well as creams and lotions, salves, teas, syrups, honey, oils, vinegars, and suppositories.

This year also involves an in-depth investigation of human physiology to understand the complex interactions among reproductive, endocrine, nervous, skin, muscular, skeletal and digestive systems. Constitutional physiology and the impact of stress are also emphasized. Students examine the cellular system and how fluid is transported throughout the body.

  • The following is a partial list of what the program will cover:
  • Medicinal herbology
  • Herbal preparation and formulation
  • Extensive materia medica and herbal research
  • Herbal first aid and home health care
  • Natural cosmetic and skin care
  • Constitutional therapy
  • Botanical field study
  • Earth awareness and plant identification
  • Organ systems and physiology
  • Clinical case studies

On the first Sunday of each month there will be an herb walk, with exception to Winter months. There will also be three class field trips.  At the conclusion of the course, students will have a firm and well rounded foundation in herbalism. Students completing the course will be awarded a beautiful certificate suitable for framing and placement on their office wall.

In the not too distant past, keeping a family strong and healthy with simple home remedies was a common homesteading skill that every woman possessed. Identifying and utilizing wild and cultivated plants was as important and necessary as preserving food for the winter months or learning to stitch.

The “Homestead Herbalism” foundation course was designed to gather small groups of women (and of course men, too!) with the intent of re-introducing this empowering tradition by learning together, using our hands, and preparing and sharing the herbal harvest.

Farm at Coventry’s informative (and now expanded!) twelve month foundation course meets one Saturday OR Sunday every month from January through December. The course curriculum weaves informative current herbal wisdom with interesting historical facts and folk traditions. Through the seasons, from planting through harvest, we will learn to create delicious, nutritional snacks as well as therapeutic preparations using edible, medici- nal and fragrance herbs that are both culti- vated and wild crafted. Our time together will give students basic herbal knowledge and skills that will empower them to use herbs for their own nutritional, therapeutic and crea- tive needs. Our teaching areas include a cozy classroom/farmhouse kitchen, cultivated gardens on the farm and the fields and forests of northern Chester County, Pennsylvania.
